History of the Founder:
Inspiration
At the age of twenty-three, Anita Miller, began working at Universal
Fitness Center in Oklahoma City. Although, Universal was a co-ed facility
it also had a separate facility just for women. Universal was tremendously
successful for several reasons: they had a comfortable, non-intimidating
environment for women completely separate from the rest of the facility.
They also designed every square foot of their facility to produce income.
They had things for you to do, things for you to buy, they had places
to hang out, visit or grab a bite to eat. They had products, apparel,
food and services presented in a clean pleasant environment. They had
professionally trained staff with uniforms, name tags, job descriptions
and friendly smiles. They charged a premium price and had no problem
getting it. Members were treated like royalty and customer service
was a part of every membership.
This made a huge impression on Anita as did the members that literally
transformed themselves from overweight tired middle-aged men and women
to vibrant, energetic, young looking, fit individuals right before her
eyes. She saw years literally fall off their bodies and faces, confidence
took the place of insecurity and strength took the place of weakness.
This was the environment she wanted to work in; an environment where
lives were being changed.
Training
By the age of 26, Anita had spent nearly seven years earning a living
in various sales positions. She sold vacuum sweepers door to door,
sold automobiles at a new car dealership and investments over the phone
for a national investment firm while working part time at either a
fitness center or a country club. Her desire was to open her own fitness
center so she decided to move to Dallas, TX where she could get more
experience and training. She was hired as a Weight Management Center
Director for President's Health Clubs (now Bally's) to manage four
of their weight management centers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area. She
learned how to sell weight loss, weight maintenance and weight gain
programs and then taught her newly established staff to do the same.
President's Health Club owners enlisted the help of professional consultants
in the weight loss industry to train Anita in every aspect of sales,
marketing and management. Anita successfully opened and operated four
weight management centers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area before moving
to Nutri-System Weight Loss Centers in 1988 where she again received
highly specialized training in the area of weight management and excelled
as top sales person.
Disillusioned
As Anita continued in the weight loss industry she began to see that
the majority of the customers, after spending thousands of dollars
losing weight, were gaining all their weight back the following year.
They would then pay more money to lose weight again only to put it
back on again. She saw how devastating this cycle was to their health,
to their self-esteem and to their pocket book.
Conflicted
Anita knew there had to be a better way. She had made a lot of money
selling something she no longer believed in. Having a background in
fitness and an interest in nutrition she knew it had to be a combination
of both. Most weight loss programs did not include an exercise program.
She then found herself in a position where she was being recognized
for top sales and rewarded with a lot of money for selling something
she no longer believed in.
The Move
Anita finally decided to do the right thing; she quit her job in the
weight loss industry. She then applied to Johnson and Johnson and got
a position as a corporate nutrition consultant where she did nutrition
and lifestyle assessments along with health related testing for large
corporations such as Phillips Petroleum Company. The training and education
was exactly what convinced Anita that a regular exercise routine and
a proper nutrition program was the only way to achieve healthy weight
loss; not fad dieting. She worked under a Ph.D. and professor at the
University of Oklahoma while learning about clinical nutrition and
lifestyle related diseases.
The Dream
In 1996, Anita finally stepped into ownership of her own ladies only
fitness center. Since then, Anita has done little else but perfect
the operating systems, services and equipment she now offers through
her licensed program, Figures Fitness. She began franchising her
system in 1997. After two years of running fitness franchise company
and competing as a franchise company in the exploding ladies only fitness
industry she found that she was limiting the number of people she could
help by being a franchise.
Transition from Franchising
The majority of people that were interested in opening a ladies only
fitness center did not want to sign a long-term legal contract. Many
had friends that were unhappy with other franchise companies for various
reasons. Many people wanted the freedom to add services, products or
change their pricing structure to make their business more successful
as opposed to being confined by the regulations of a fitness franchise
company.
Most of these entrepreneurs just needed to learn some skills required
for success and have a system of operating that was proven. The Figures
program that Anita designed had what they needed. Thus the licensing
program was born.
The Figures Licensing Program
With no on-going fees, no confining regulations the Figures Licensing
Program is perfectly paired with all the positive aspects of a proven
successful operating system taught by an experienced veteran in the
industry.
Be The Best, Offer The Best
Anita continues her education and experience by keeping up with industry
related topics and news. She takes continuing education courses and
enlists the help of professionals.
